Drei der weltbesten Skialpinisten wagen in Alaska eines der letzten großen Abenteuer: Die Besteigung des "Mount St. Elias" und die Skiabfahrt auf der längsten, schneebedeckten Vertikalen der Welt.
Die Skialpinisten Axel Naglich, Peter Ressmann und Jon Johnston suchen 2007 die größte Herausforderung: Die Besteigung des Mount St. Elias in Alaska - und die Skiabfahrt auf der längsten, schneebedeckten vertikalen Linie der Welt.
Der Mount Saint Elias ist der zweithöchste Berg in Kanada und den Vereinigten Staaten. Der Berg wurde 1897 durch Luigi Amadeo von Savoyen das erste Mal bestiegen.
Der zu der Eliaskette (auch Saint Elias Mountains) gehörende Berg liegt auf der US-amerikanischen Seite in Alaska im Wrangell-St.-Elias-Nationalpark und auf der kanadischen Seite im Kluane-Nationalpark. In den USA wird er auf Grund seiner Höhe von 18.009 Fuss als Fourteener klassifiziert. Es wird angenommen, dass der Berg seinen Namen vom Kap Saint Elias auf Kayak Island hat.
Der Berg heißt in der Sprache Tlingit Yaas'éit'aa Shaa, was Berg hinter eisiger Bucht bedeutet. Manchmal wird er auch Shaa Tléin großer Berg genannt.
Der Mount Saint Elias ist relativ der höchste Berg der Welt. Seine 5.489 Meter ragen direkt vom Meeresniveau in die Höhe, während der absolut höchste Berg der Erde, der Mount Everest mit 8.848 Meter nur rund 3.500 Meter aus dem tibetischen Hochland herausragt.
Der aus dem Jahr 2009 stammende Dokumentarfilm "Mount St. Elias" des österreichischen Regisseurs Gerald Salmina zeigt eine Expedition, bei welcher der Berg mit Skiern abgefahren werden sollte.
